Eating out in Spain is not a luxury. It is a regular part of life, and the prices reflect that. The Costa Cálida is particularly good value because it has not been inflated by mass tourism in the way the Costa del Sol has.

Healthcare

Healthcare is one of the strongest arguments for living in Spain, and one of the most misunderstood.

Public healthcare (Sistema Nacional de Salud) is available to all legal residents who are registered in the social security system. If you are employed or self-employed (autónomo) in Spain, you and your dependents are covered. If you are retired with an S1 form from another EU country, you are also covered. The public system is good — not perfect, but genuinely good. Wait times for specialists can be longer than in private care, but emergency and primary care are excellent.

Public healthcare cost: €0 per month (funded through social security contributions or inter-country agreements).

Private healthcare is popular among expats, particularly those who want English-speaking doctors, shorter wait times, or coverage while their residency status is being processed. Monthly costs depend heavily on age:

Transport

The Costa Cálida is a car-dependent region. There is no metro, and train connections are limited to the Cartagena–Murcia line. If you plan to live here full-time, you will almost certainly need a vehicle.

A few practical notes. Spanish roads are excellent. The AP-7 motorway runs along the coast and is now toll-free. Parking in most Costa Cálida towns is easy and usually free — another advantage over the overcrowded costas further north and south. If you are importing a car from another country, you have six months to re-register it in Spain (the process is called matriculación). Buying a second-hand car locally is often simpler.

Insurance

Beyond the health insurance covered above, there are a few other insurance costs to factor in:

One thing we tell everyone: do not skip home insurance. Spain gets occasional heavy rainstorms (called gota fría or DANA), and water damage to properties is a real risk, particularly in ground-floor or basement-level apartments. A €200 annual policy can save you thousands.

Taxes

Property-related taxes in Spain are not high, but they are unavoidable. Here are the recurring annual taxes you need to know about:

The climate does most of the entertainment work for you. Budget €50–€150 per month for structured entertainment and you will live well.

For comparison, a similar lifestyle in southern England would cost £2,500–£3,500 per month. In coastal France, €2,200–€3,000. In coastal Italy, €1,800–€2,600. The Costa Cálida is not just affordable — it offers arguably the best value-for-money coastal lifestyle in Western Europe.

Where Do These Numbers Come From?

We want to be transparent about methodology, because too many cost-of-living articles are based on database averages that nobody recognises.

These figures come from three sources: our own household bills and spending (we live here), data from clients and expat communities who have shared their numbers with us, and cross-referencing with local estate agents, utility providers, and municipal tax records. Where ranges are wide, it is because genuine variation exists — a ground-floor apartment in a smaller town will always cost less than a penthouse in La Manga.

If a number seems too good to be true, check it. Walk into a Mercadona in San Pedro del Pinatar and price a weekly shop. Sit down for a menú del día in Mazarrón. Call Iberdrola and ask for their current electricity tariff. These numbers hold up because they are real.

What These Numbers Do Not Include

A few costs that are personal and variable, which we have deliberately excluded:

Flights home — Murcia (RMU) and Alicante (ALC) airports are both within reach. Budget airline fares to the UK, Germany, Scandinavia, and Eastern Europe start from €30–€80 one way if booked ahead.
Children’s education — Public schools are free. International schools range from €300–€700 per month depending on the institution.
Clothing and personal items — Similar to the rest of Spain. Zara, Primark, and Decathlon are all present in the region.
Pets — Vet costs are lower than Northern Europe. Expect €30–€50 for a routine consultation.
Savings and investments — Obviously depends on your income and goals.

The Bottom Line

The Costa Cálida is not the cheapest place to live in Spain — inland Murcia, parts of Andalucía, and rural Castilla-La Mancha are cheaper.
